U.S. to release 30 million barrels from strategic petroleum reserve 23 Jun 2011, 3:34 pm
The Energy Department says the U.S. will release 30 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to make up a disruption in supplies from the Middle East and North Africa. The move by the Obama administration is part of a broader international effort to pump more than 60 million barrels onto the world market over the next month, the Associated Press reports. The administration says the uprising in Libya has resulted in a loss of about 1.5 million barrels of oil a day. The release comes as the United States approaches a period of high energy use in July and August. See photos of: Libya To report corrections and clarifications, contact Standards Editor .
